Weeks Like These

Goodness! Weeks like these make me tired just thinking about them. I traveled for work this past week and all the meetings and team building endeavors were great, but man I was tired by Friday. I have to tell you I did kick butt at our bowling contest. I bowled the highest game, 213! It was great to see everyone and hang out with all my friends in Virginia, but it was nice to get back home to my family too.

I wish I could say that this weekend was as relaxing as last weekend, but that is just not the case! This weekend was spent preparing for home improvements that will be finished on Monday. I have Monday off since I traveled on President's Day last Monday. We are replacing our front door and three interior doors at the house, so Saturday and Sunday were spent painting doors. I know it will be worth it in the end, but man it was a lot of work. I'll put up some before and after pictures tomorrow after we finished.

We also had our first baseball practice on Sunday. The weather was perfect and it was nice to get out with the boys. I had a good time helping with practice and getting the team ready for the round robin tournament in mid March. I was in charge of pop flys today and I have to tell you my are is a little sore!

On that note, I'm off to put my feet up and relax before I pass out.

The Weekend

I love weekends such as this. Very little work to do and lots of time to play! Friday night was the parents meeting with the baseball team. No one revolted at the thought of me helping to coach, so that was a good sign. Practices will start within the next couple of weeks, so we are all looking forward to that. Zach had a friend stay the night Friday and Saturday night, so he was very excited about that.

Saturday was rainy most of the day, so we curled up on the couch and watched TV while the boys played. We watched The Company. It was long, really glad we didn't try to go to the theater and watch it, but it was a good rental. The boy were so good all day long. They played video games, watched TV and had Yugioh battles. Saturday evening we went to the PBR (no Patrick not Pabst Blue Ribbon, Professional Bull Riding competition) while the boys stayed home with a sitter. Wendy loves going and it was a nice night out. We went to dinner at Texas Roadhouse before hand. Dinner was just ok. Typically I love eating there because they make such good food, but we had prime rib this time and it was a little tough.

Sunday we hung out with the Orins (aka Orin, Jeni, Seth, and Skyler) and the Noels (aka Noel, Dollie and Tristan). We had such a good time. We had chilli dogs, frito pies and plain chilli for lunch and it was pretty tasty. After lunch we played Catch Phrase and it was a good time. Nothing better than just relaxing with some great company.

We were all kinda full from lunch, so for dinner we had a special treat. I bought Wendy a dessert fondue set for Valentine's Day, so we made chocolate fondue and dipped all sorts of fruits in it. It was very yummy, I highly recommend investing in one!

Anyhow, I'm off to finish packing for my trip to Virginia tomorrow. I hope everyone's weekend was as enjoyable as ours! Here is a funny video to get your Monday started out right!

THE Redskins

How cool I am! I had my first request to write on a specific topic! (Thanks Althea!) In case you don't know, I am Redskins fan. (If you don't know that... who are you and where have you been?!?) This year was a rough year for us Redskins fans. We lost Sean Taylor, who was tragically killed in his home. We lost in the first round of the playoffs and at the end of the season, Coach Gibbs decided it was time for him to retire (again). I can only imagine that this was an extremely difficult season for him and the entire team.

So began the hurt for a new head coach. The topic canidate in my mind was Gregg Williams. He had done a fantastic job with the defense and had the support of the players who immediately came out after Gibbs retirement and supported him for the job. He also showed an extreme amount of class when he sent only 10 players out on the field for the first defensive play after Taylor was killed. (Nevermind the small fact that he forgot to tell Gibbs he was going to do that.)

To make a long story a little shorter, not only did Williams not get the job he got fired! At this point all I can think is WTH! All sorts of canidates start flying around, including Bill Cowher and many others. Snyder interviewed a variety of canidates, including several former head coaches. He waited until after the super bowl to interview a coach from the Giants. After all this he promotes Jim Zorn to head coach. Zorn had been hired as the offensive coordinator only a few weeks prior. Wow.. that came out of left field.

To give you a feeling of the pain Redskins fans have had to endure: This is our 5th head coach since Snyder bought the team. I guess we should be glad that he didn't spend 25 million for a five year contract on an unproven head coach (please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spurrier for more information).

So how do I feel about the new coaching staff? Well, I'm glad Bugel is still on the staff and it was nice to hear Zorn say he wasn't going to mess with the running game at his initial press conference. And Zorn.... well to quote Althea "We will see." Our track record with first time head coaches isn't exactly stellar. Spurrier and Norv Turner immediately come to mind. I mean, Zorn has a good track record as the quarterbacks coach for the Seahawks, but is that going to translate into a good head coach? Seattle's program has produced several good head coaches but is Zorn the next great one? Zorn has one familiar face on the coaching staff as Stump Mitchell was announced as the Running Backs coach. He has a good track record, having worked with Shawn Alexander and Ricky Watters. In his press conference he talked about relying on the people around him, so hopefully the rest of the coaching stuff will help guide him to a successful first season. I wish we would have kept Gregg Williams, but Blanche should be an easy transition since he has been working with the defensive line unit. After so many of the players came out and supported Williams it will be interesting to see what their reaction is to Zorn.

This guy rambles a bit, but he brings up some good points if you have a little more than three minutes to spare.

My final thought... I am hopefully optimisic that next season will be a good one. Zorn, are you the man to take my 'Skins back to the Super Bowl? "We will see".

Movie Night

Wednesday nights are a special night at our house. This is the official family movie night. What exacttly does that mean you might ask. Well that is the one night of the week that we sit in front of the TV and watch a movie as we are eating dinner. We take turns picking movies, one week Zach picks and the next week we pick. This is primarily so that we don't have to watch Pokemon or Yugioh every week!

The movie tonight was Flushed Away and I have to admit I was pleasantly suprised! If you are looking for a kid friendly funny movie I would recommend giving this a try. It was funny for Zach but had some good stuff for adults as well. Here take a look at the trailer.

On a personal note, my thoughts go out to Eileen tonight. She had surgery today but is doing great. She will hopefully get to go home tomorrow and be back on the ice rink causing havoc before you know it! Take care Eileen, we are thinking of you.

Baseball anyone?

Zach's baseball coach called this week to let us know that it is almost time to start practice for spring baseball. This is fun because Zach started to really enjoy playing by the end of fall season and I think participating in the team sport is good for him on a lot of levels. Plus, the practices tend to wear him out, so that is always a bonus.

The more exciting news was that they asked me to help coach the team, which I am very excited about. Last season I helped some during practice, but it will be nice to have a more official role this season. We have our parents meeting on Friday night, so hopefully they will all be supportive of me taking that role.

More to come on this I'm sure!

Here I go!

I don't really believe in New Years Resolutions, but this crazy friend of mine (Thanks Patrick!) has a blog and I truly enjoy reading his ramblings, so I decided to make a resolution to try it out for myself. This is my first time trying to keep up with a blog, so who knows how it will go, but I will do my best to give you an insight on the craziness that is our life.
